LM Montgomery can do no wrong, in my mind. This book fits right in with all the others of hers that I love so dearly—good, kind, noble characters; breathtakingly gorgeous nature descriptions; an awareness of the human condition; and the beauty in life that can be found despite the difficult and ugly parts of life. I first read this book as a child, but I enjoyed it just as much now as I did then. When I read it all those years ago, I’m not sure I noticed the veiled references to Neil’s Italian-ness or the slightly infantilistic perspective Eric has about Kilmeny. There are certainly some things here that give the reader pause. But overall, I would say this is a nice little love story written at a different time in history.

This showed up for free or nearly so for my Kindle, and I loved Anne of Green Gables as a teenager so I gave it a try. Although I may be remembering the Anne of Green Gables series too fondly, this story didn't live up to what Montgomery was capable of. The love story was predictable, and the language at times degenerated into sentimental tripe. Although distrust of foreigners was part of the times in which she wrote, encountering it so openly in her descriptions of Neil Gordon was disappointing. All told, I wonder if I should reread The Anne series before handing them off to my daughter. (nah. I'll just read them along with her...)

A fun and romantic read that I picked up in Avonlea in PEI. I will read all LMM books with new eyes after having seen the beauty of PEI with my own eyes. This is a clean, short and sweet read that was perfect for my drive home from the beautiful Maritimes.

Not one of LMM’s best... I wish she’d spent more time with dialogue & character interactions... felt like this was a paint-by-numbers plot.

Reread review: This is the absolute best book to end the year on. I love it to pieces.

Original review: One of my absolute favourites. Short, and ever so sweet. My heart is cured.
