I now see why L.M Montgomery has captured so many readers with her writing. This book is so sweet and special. The characters are dear, the romance lovely, the setting and descriptions of the orchard are enchanting, and Kilmeny and Eric a very sweet couple. The story is somewhat unsual which is nice to see in this time when most modern romance novels are so cliche.

This novella is the first book of L.M. Montgomery’s that I've read that isn’t part of her Anne of Green Gables series. It is a love story between Kilmeny who is nonspeaking (she is referred to as “mute” in the book) and Eric, who is temporarily teaching school in the town where Kilmney lives.

I loved this novella! It is short and sweet and doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is - a romance. L.M. Montgomery has such a beautiful way of writing about nature and paints such vivid pictures with her words. While reading this, I did have to keep in mind the time it was written in as there are some parts that definitely feel outdated. But all in all, I loved this story and I’m so excited to dive into more of my L.M. Montgomery collection.

I have to admit, I loved this book.

It was sort of terrible, don't get me wrong, but it was so terrible that it seemed like a tongue-in-cheek joke from beyond the grave. This was published right between Anne of Avonlea and The Story Girl, so it's not like Montgomery wasn't writing strong, funny, charming female characters around the time.

The issues with it (nonsensical romance, racism, florid prose, medical opinions, etc) were so over-the-top that the entire thing felt like a parody.

Read Kilmeny, but go into it with a sense of humor. There is some lovely writing in there to enjoy.
