Oh my. Well, even the best of authors can have a clinker or two in their oeuvre, and this has to be L.M. Montgomery's.

Yeah it ain’t great.
emotional hopeful slow-paced

I haven’t read this in over 20 years, so didn’t remember much, but it is a perfectly sweet LMM book. Very good little story in the perfect way that she writes.

A sweet little 100yo romance

Well, this is certainly not Montgomery at her best. It is more syrupy than sweet. Eric, a wealthy college graduate, falls in love with Kilmeny, a beautiful girl who cannot speak. She, of course, is the picture of childlike innocence and he sets out to woo her and teach her how to love.
Nauseating, really. And predictable, down to the last scene.
I hope Montgomery wrote this one to pay the bills.

So, I’m currently reading a bio of L. M. Montgomery en route to PEI, and I’m trying to read her other works that I haven’t encountered before. This is basically a romance novel for the period. It’s a cute story, but not Anne.

One of L.M.'s lovely, sweet short stories stretched to novella form.
