How interesting that I gave this book 3 stars over a decade ago. This story was comforting in its slower pace, as my grief has been slow and creeping lately. I loved the imagery of the pool, and the characters won me over. It’s a lovely, very sad story, as a lot of ours are.

It took a while for me to get into this story and though I did eventually start caring about Lisey and was curious about Scott's childhood, overall I would say this novel was way too long and never really got beyond mildly interesting. The format of the book was sometimes well done, with hints at things being revealed early, only to be fully understood way later in the novel, but it also left you very confused at the beginning with little reason to want to keep reading.

So this is Stephen Kings favorite story he has written and was inspired by his own brush with death when he was hit by a van while jogging. Knowing all that, I really wanted to like this book. I really did. I just didn't. It seemed to be too long with way to much padding that added nothing to the story. It would have been an amazing 300 page novel. I have noticed this more and more with these later King novels. They seem to be bloated and loose, instead of tight and poignant.
It is possible that I have grown beyond Stephen King, which would make me very sad because like so many before me, he was my introduction into horror writing and there was a time when I absorbed everything he wrote as soon as I could get my hands on it.
This really isn't a review for this book. Sorry.
