I’ve been wanting to read this for so long, and it did not disappoint m, it was so much better than I thought! The build up was done so effortlessly and I was so engaged in the story. I wish the ending was a little more stretched out but otherwise, I loved this book

Eileen is a weird girl yes, but not one you can love. Pity and self-loathing get tiring throughout the book. I finished the story wanting more of a resolution/explanation to the things unfolding in her life.

Just the right amount of weird girl energy.
3.5 stars. Moshfegh’s characters are where she really shines, particularly characters that are disgusting, disturbing, and horrible. Being inside Eileen’s head is a truly awful experience yet, somehow, oddly compelling. Her sadness and self-loathing is interrupted by just enough self awareness to humanize her, making her judgment and misanthropy all the more difficult to read. Despite occasionally turning my stomach, Eileen is such a real character that I almost found myself rooting for her. I also really liked Moshfegh’s choice to use a retrospective point of view to further humanize Eileen. If I were rating solely for Moshfegh’s writing I would give a 4.5, but considering the content I had to deduct a star. Personally, I don’t enjoy stories that make me feel ill, and Eileen’s inner dialogue literally made me queasy at times. The story also lagged in places and felt excessive in others. Overall, pretty good book, especially if you like character studies and don’t mind some gross descriptions, but I wouldn’t read it again.
