If daddy issues, crippling insecurity, the desperation to belong, and intrusive thoughts are your thing, this might be the book for you!

But in all seriousness this was pretty dark and disturbing. The author did a good job capturing some of the all encompassing thoughts and obsessions of young women/girls (i.e on a crush, or in regard to outward appearances etc.), but then it just got twistier and twistier. Still not sure if I enjoyed this…

boring. I really liked Ottessa's other book My Year of Rest and Relaxation. this one disappointed me. it's all tell, no show. everything seemed like dragging and was so bored the whole time. the random flashbacks to her family was so repetitive and unnecessary. Eileen is very depraved of human connection that when she finally finds it, it changes her whole life and she'll cross lines even if she was naturally passive. it's important to know your weaknesses so others can't use those to control you like Rebecca did with Eileen.

Mann Booker Prize long listed. A very odd book not really my cup of tea but very original none the less, not as charming or funny as The Sisters Brothers another quirky novel.

i finished the book on my birthday. sitting on the couch. listening to a lorde vinyl. it feels strangely fitting to me.. corey is taping balloons to the ceiling and eileen is leaving a woman to die.

one of the few books i have read where there is an emphasis on the characters, and their day-to-day lives and inner monologue - as opposed to most books focusing on plot. it only starts to focus on the plot right at the end, and there is little buildup to the climax before it happens all at once. i liked the plot twist a lot - it shocked me but everything sort of fell into place afterwards. the book heavly relied on ottessa moshfegh's descriptions of characters and how the main character eileen viewed the world around her. without her charming descriptions the book would of been a bit boring. worth a read though

Mostly exposition/character development until the very end, but then you’re gripped with the plot twist.
