Immediately after Marco, Jake is forced to face the possibility of taking down the compromised member of his family, Tom. Unlike Marco, he is unable to see past the trees for the forest. He's ruled by his emotions and it puts the group at odds for a good moment. We once again see that he's struggling with the weight of being the leader

The last two books have been about family and sacrifice towards it. It's odd and refreshing ghost-writing for this extensive series. However, I particularly enjoyed how Jake ends up having the wrong end of the stick.

The main plot of this book was decent, centered around a dilemma that looked like either Tom or Jake's dad would have to die. It got addressed without anyone dying, but that's not what bothered me. At one point they have abducted Principal Chapman and they just intentionally let him go. They're supposed to be fighting a desperate guerilla war against the Yeerks and need any edge they can get. Just letting him go when they easily could have starved his Yeerk and freed him felt childish and lame.

Not a lot happens plot wise (technically the plot goes to square one at the end), but it is a really nice character study/insight of Jake, and for that I give this five stars
