I liked this book more than I thought I would. The characters drew me in from immediately, thought I thought it petered out by the end

Trying to describe the plot of this book makes it sound like a Jodi Picoult novel--and I hate Jodi Picoult novels. For me, the major difference is that Quindlen is much more focused on characters than on plot, so she doesn't need to rely on crazy plot twists to carry the novel. The "shocking act of violence" mentioned in the jacket copy is almost secondary--there's no mystery to solve and no manipulative revelations. The focus is simply on the family and the way they react to and slowly rebuild from what happens.

This was well-written, but I wanted more character development with some of the characters. I read this in two days, so obviously it was interesting to read, but I still didn't love it. I kept thinking I was going to find out more about certain people and I never did. Whatever. I guess that's what happens when a book is written in the first person - only one point of view.

I really could not get into this book for some reason. Maybe I'll try again when I have nothing else to read.

Incredibly well written. The author paints a picture with her words of every day life, how things are and then how they become after the event. She writes a few things about death that resonated with me. A stirring story about how life can change in an instant.

Her observations about motherhood are so spot on and insightful. Was a bit stunned at the turn of events, wish I had been spoiled because I was not expecting it at all!

This is one of those books that is really just heart-wrenching, like it really could happen to you. My mom really liked it and I can see why...it is told from the perspective of a middle-aged mother with 3 high school age kids, I'm sure it would hit home even more with that demographic than with mine but I really enjoyed it-it makes you feel thankful for what you have.
