I get the hype of this book! Very entertaining and fast paced, but the only human character I cared about died! I wasn’t really able to get invested in any of the other characters except for the dragons, so I’m very hopeful for more dragon content next book.

Growing up, the start of summer always meant the beginning of a thick ass fantasy novel — maybe even a series. And I think that’s what I’ve been doing subconsciously ever since then.
The plot is predictable & some of the smut is goofy, but why does everyone hate this thing so much? We’ve got casually queer characters, a protagonist whose disability affects the plot but doesn’t tokenize her, and a pretty interesting magical universe. I do wish we got more interaction with her & her dragons like the bond that we get in comparable novels such as Eragon, but maybe that’s something that shows up in later books.
Carolyn, I get what you meant now when you said this book is written like an intro to fantasy for non-fantasy readers. But it was fun! It’s been a while since I’ve read a big ol’ series fantasy tome, so I had a good time with this as an audiobook.
