i was amazed/shocked when it was revealed that charles, while being supposedly "progressive", is responsible for building prisons.

the complete ignorance of the white characters was difficult and frustrating to read, but that just shows why this is such an important story to read. 

i'm a little confused by the ending even though i'm sure it's meant to be of significance.
