I really rather adored this. So much better than the movie that was made and the new tv show that's coming out. (Please note, nothing really wrong with either of those by themselves. But the book is always better.) The movie goes way off base, in my opinion. Takes too much liberty and freedom with changing aspects of what was supposed to happen. The series on Disney Plus, at least based on what I've seen so far, is much more accurate.

Anyway, enough about that. This book was really great. I love Percy. He's such a good kid. And I was so mad, on his behalf, early on in the book. I mean... a very small portion of it might've been his fault, because he held things back and didn't explain things fully to anybody at this point. But he was used to being treated poorly by just about everyone except his mom. When that happens, what else should you expect. And then everyone else at that point, who knows what's happening and could've easily cleared things up, chooses not to! They let this poor child, who feels bad enough about things prior, to believe that maybe he's really just troubled. That maybe he's crazy or on his way to going crazy, and I just... ugh! I was so mad! At everyone! (Except Percy, obviously. Percy is precious and should be given the warmest of hugs always, and if I could've given him one I would have.)

I'd say more, but I'm pretty sure I'd just be spoiling things. Suffice to say, I'm greatly satisfied with this read, and can't wait to get into the rest of the series, and the rest of the universe Rick Riordan has created here for us.

Our seven year old must have really liked it because he wanted to read the second book as soon as we finished the first. He also asked lots of questions along the way and is developing an interest in Greek mythology. Gotta like all that!

I feel like if I was younger I could have enjoyed it. But the plot moves around too quickly for me, too many things simply fall in to place to work and the writing... perhaps if the series was presented as a show/cartoon I would enjoy it, but as a book the writing is simple and bland. All of this combined with the fact that it relies on Greek Mythology to build a world instead of building it itself, leads to a disappointing book.
