What am I supposed to do until November? How am I supposed to go on until then? This book has completely destroyed me and damn, it feels good!
As horrid as it sounds, I completely fell in love with the world. Everything about it was just so incredibly wicked. The concepts of the Scythes, immortality, everything! It was all just so cool. I could help but smile like a loon over everything. That probably makes me a bit f'ed up. Oh well.
Okay. I will try and cool my jets to give you guys a coherent review. I know that this book has already done the circuit in Goodreads but I wasn't able to get my hands on it until recently because of my library being slow. So I'll just give the lowdown very briefly and then talk about the characters and all my feels.
There is no death by natural causes in this world. Everybody lives forever and can "turn a corner" when they decide they have gotten too old. There is no pain, healing is done incredibly fast, no mental illness and the world is run by a supercomputer (for lack of better words) called the Thunderhead. Because nobody dies, Scythes came into the picture. They are taught in the ways of "gleaning" or killing people so the word population stays in check.
I mean, how cool is that? You can live forever, unless you get gleaned. There is no illness or anything like that. You can reset your age to as low as 21. I mean I really don't see any drawbacks to this society. I know that in the book, some people become stagnant because they don't have to work to be successful. There is no poverty and everybody has the same amount of wealth as the next person. There is no crime with the exception of a few unsavories. But the most they do is vandalize some property.
The Scythedome is wicked cool. Each Scythe is called Honorable Scythe. If they are accepted they get to chose their Patron Historic, which means they chose the name of a famous person from the Age of Mortality. There was Scythe Mandela, Scythe Curie, Scythe Colbert, etc. They live by a code of ethics that is actually really cool. Really, being a Scythe is about compassion and knowing that you are doing the world a service and keeping everything balanced.
The two main characters are Citra and Rowan. Citra was fun. I enjoyed her POV. She questioned everything and tried to look at things through others point of view. She did not judge or at least attempted to not judge. She knew who she was and never lost herself even when things were going south.
Rowan was okay for me. His transformation was frightening. He seemed like such a caring child, even if he was a little reckless. To see how a person could get inside the mind of a child and twist it in such a way was shocking. I'm very anxious to see how much he has turned anti hero in the next book.
I could literally go on and on about how much I loved this book but I hope what I did write makes some sort of sense. I was nervous about it because I love stuff like this. Creepy and dark things are just so fascinating to me. I just didn't want to get disappointed. This book takes a really different approach to the Grim Reaper. I highly suggest it to anybody, really.

There is a lot of death in this book due to the nature of the plot itself and what the Scythe's actually do. Some of the deaths are descriptive while others are not. It depends on the Scythe and who's POV is talking at that moment.
