Only Diana Gabaldon could merge Spanish Jews + Scottish men + French society based in the 1700s and make it amazing. Queen!
I first [listen] read this as part of a collection and the first time, didn't really care for it since I hadn't read Outlander and was not invested in the characters. When I re- read it, knowing who Jamie and Ian were, I enjoyed it much more.
This was an alright read. It was a quick read. I read Outlander a few years back, and now I need to read it again. I wanted to see the events before Jamie meeting Claire. I thought this was a good introduction to Jamie's character. I did find the story a bit boring at parts. Maybe it is because I love Jamie and Claire and their adventures in Outlander so much. I did like seeing the friendship between Jamie and Ian. The fact that they are both virgins, and they both were attracted to the same person. I cannot wait to read the series from rereading book 1 to end. I am looking forward to seeing what Diana Gabaldon has in store. Also, I cannot wait to see who she will write about next when Jamie and Claire's story is complete. Overall, an okay read.

Seeing Jamie as a wee, innocent lad has me all kinds of emotional.
trigger warnings: loss of loved ones, severe whipping/lashing, war themes, death, murder, violence, violence against women, rape (both on page and off page), racism and slurs.

While you don’t have to read this short novella to read the Outlander series, it just added to Jamie’s backstory. It was interesting to read about him before he met Claire and all the shenanigans he got into immediately after leaving Fort William.
One scene that left me a little uncomfortable is while they’re in a brothel but I had to keep reminding myself that were just the times centuries ago.

This is a cracking little tale. Tightly woven prose which is almost the opposite of the lush, slow unfolding novels that make up the main Outlander series.
At little more than one hundred pages this is over just as you are getting into the plot. It's great to be back in France with Jamie and the portrayal of this callow youth who is in exile after his brutal whipping is both tender and hard-edged.
I must admit that I was expecting to find out how Ian got his injury but that is not in this book. Instead we spend time with the pair as they work as soldiers for hire in and around Bordeaux. There is a love story at the heart of this tale but telling you who the lovers are would spoil it so I won't.
Fans of Outlander will want to read this, obviously. Whether it can bring in new readers is questionable. I guess those put off by the sheer size of the main series books may see this as an in and to this end the second part of this book offers up the first 150 pages of the first Outlander book.
I was taken aback by that as I had hoped for a longer story but I can see why the publishers have done it.
