This book was brutal and is stripped from the headlines. It was exhausting, angering, challenging, and ultimately full of hope I didn’t expect. It’s given me a lot to think about and will def feature in my next therapy session when I finally go back.

I don’t know if it’s because I read Pet so long ago, but I just didn’t feel connected to this book!

It was beautifully written (as always) and I enjoyed the story. But I felt disconnected.

I appreciated the storytelling and world building and how it shows the raw and gritty realities of protesting and trying to make the world a better place, and all the struggle that comes with it. It was full of dread, emotion, helplessness, identify, finding your place, and hope above all else.

Still a fantastic read & I would recommend!!

what does the revolution look like? what will it take to rid our society of oppression and racism in all its forms? is violence a necessary part of the equation? these are the questions Bitter grapples with in this beautiful young adult novel. i enjoyed reading it and the writing is spectacular as per usual for Emezi

but i wish Emezi had left more room for the reader to try to determine for themselves the questions around the role of violence in revolution

it is good, but it’s not amazing
