This book is melancholic, it's atmospheric, dystopian, beautiful, and so incredibly human while also being so very alien. There is so much that doesn't make any sense and that we will never be able to make sense of, and I think part of experiencing this book is finding some sort of peace with that not knowing. Our main character is so unique in that we can relate to her, looking into her life, in all the ways that are typical of the human experience: finding love in found family and friendship, learning new things, an insatiable drive to know more... but we also find ourselves being so different from her in that she has never known life as a human like our own lives. Raised in captivity, not knowing what some of the most mundane objects are and what they do, unlike her fellow women, we get this really cool perspective on the world from her (if it even is our world). I Who Have Never Known Men is so thought provoking and will for sure sit with me for a while; can't wait to discuss it in book club!

I don’t know how to rate it because I was so curious to read and sped through, but it also made me angry and confused. I haven’t really stopped thinking about the book or talking about it so I guess that is a good thing?
god this made me sad. i was moved and haunted and contemplative the entire novel, which was so effective both due to and in spite of its simplicity. i would say probably not the best beach read but i’ve never been good at choosing one in the first place. anyway, good read for those questioning femininity, humanity, life’s purpose, patriarchy etc etc, or those who just like a dystopian. i guess.
