This was SO good! I love a good road trip story. This book felt so realistic - especially with everything that happened towards the end. I loved the friendship the most I think. Some elements were a little crazy, like how quickly she fell for this guy and what she was willing to do to see him, but the journey itself felt relatable.

  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

Well I finished it after all. This could have been a 4 star read easily, BUT the main character got the best of me near the end. Yes, everyone forgave her because that just how contemporary YA goes, but god knows I have not, god knows I wanted someone to shake her while saying: "HE IS JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU!"

On the other hand, the writing was pretty good, most of the supporting characters were interesting, there was a diverse cast of characters (in terms of race), plus the portrayal of grief and loss was heartbreakingly beautiful, I related to it a lot and it made me cry at various points throughout the novel. So I'll give it 3 starts instead of 2, and I will say that this is the "best" (relative terms) contemporary YA that I have read so far this year. So yeah, maybe give it a try, but I guess only if you do not get angry with characters easily, cause if you do then this is probably not the book for you.

This book was a mixed bag for me. Overall, I liked it.
What I liked:
• Initially, the romance
• Parts of the road trip
• The idea of the quiz show
• Eva's reflections regarding her father
• Lulu
• Eva's grieving process and other character's sharing their grief

What I wasn't so crazy about:
• Parts of the road trip
• Most of what happened in California

I will say, that the ending was nice, and the characters all seemed to be moving in a positive direction, which was what I really wanted.

After trying for about an hour to find the words for a review, I've only got this: This book was one of the best. It handles the stages of grief and life afterwards in a way not many do, and it paints such a realistic picture that I found myself saying so many times inside my head How did this author know I've had these very thoughts before? This is has literally how I've felt before. And don't let the title fool you: sure, there is some kissing, but romance does not drive this book, and it has one of the absolute best mother-daughter relationships I've ever read. Go and read this book.

The main character of this novel was slightly annoying and the romance not particularly believable. The parts that I enjoyed were the road trip elements: the descriptions of the various different places the main character Eva and her best friend Annie visit on a journey across multiple states.
