5 stars. Having been burned by vehement recommendations of mega popular books in the past year (looking at you, Project Hail Mary, among others), I was more than reluctant to give this a shot - boy am I glad I did! An incredibly written novel with characters that feel more real than some real people I know. I couldn't put it down, and I cannot wait to read the rest of the series. Perfection!

DNF at 25%
This book just wasn't for me. First I was interested in the dynamics of the two characters, but at the 25%, nothing had truly happened in the plot, and the character interactions were rather cyclical: Lila does something mean, defensive, intelligent, or a combination of the three. Elena finds herself inexplicably drawn to Lila, despite attempting to carve her own path.
At 25% I was expecting the book to pick up the pace at some point soon, because the book began with the women in their old age, before flashing backward. But then I found out that this is a series of four books, book 1 ends with the main characters as teenagers, and we won't reach old age until 4 books in. I can't do four books of this. I can't even do one book of this. Also, four books to uncover the answer to the mystery introduced in the first couple pages of book 1?? I just can't do it. The hook was not strong enough to persevere to the end.

Påminnelser om barndom, barndomsvänner, sättet att växa ihop och isär. Hur ens persona kan vara beroende av en annan människa.
Lite seg i början men sen kom den igång mer och överraskade med hur väl den slår an i minnet hos en kvinna.
