This is my first Hellboy series that I've read. Not counting the Anthology styled [b:Hellboy: Weird Tales Omnibus|21532245|Hellboy Weird Tales Omnibus|Mike Mignola|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1462139443s/21532245.jpg|50486314].
This was pretty fun, nice look at Hellboy that I remember seeing in those animated shorts that released around the time of the Hellboy feature films had. Quick one-offs with a slight (very slight) arc going on throughout. Being my first run into the Hellboy mythos I wish I knew more, since the characters seem to be callbacks to the original series run. I'm not too sure though.
For new readers the stories are a fun taste of what you can get from Hellboy, and it's made me want to go read them from the beginning. I read other reviews where some of the more knowing readers fo the series, felt this slow and boring because of its procedural styled story (go to a place, find the monster, try and solve peacefully, and then have Hellboy beat the living shit out of it). And yeah I can see that, but it was still entertaining, there's life to the characters.
I don't know if the cliffhanger is leading on to a Hellboy and the B.P.R.D Vol 3 or if it starts up with the original stories, but I do wish there was some sort of way to tell, so I know whether to wait or just actually start up the original run.
The art is pretty good, it's impressive how much it can show and not show, and how it's just pure fun.

I always prefer when Mike Mignola has done the art as well as written the stories when it comes to Hellboy, but this was still a lovely book, with a lot of excellent Hellboy shorts.

Normally I really like short stories, but these aren't as strong as I'd like. Still, it's Hellboy and they are good.

Hellboy is forever fun, both the character himself and the universe he anchors. It's not wholly defined and that's the way it works for me. There is another world that breathes dark glowing life through ours as we know it, and Hellboy has a legacy of fighting bozo monsters. Here, he's not the tired fighter he eventually becomes after decades you realize of not making substantial progress. In 1953, he's still roaming with his mentor and father figure, but he's still learning just what is out there. I didn't love it as much as I do Hellboy just roaming around in his main trades, but still fun as hell.
