3.5ish on this one...

Also VERY short, but a little more action I suppose. Charles is probably my favorite character, also. He makes me genuinely chuckle!

Still unsure on this series, but I'm halfway through it and it's a pretty quick read/listen, so I'm just going to finish it, why not.

K.F. Breene is my kind of author because the moment I pick one of her books up I just don't want to put it down again until I've finished it. I loved that we spent so much time with Charles, who I have a huge crush on again, he manages to steal every scene he is in. (I first read this series 6 years ago, in the days when I didn't review what I read). The only reason I wasn't devastated at reaching the end of this was that I know I have the rest of the series waiting on my kindle.

The snark and humour make me giggle, but these silly moments are finely balanced by some fairly poignant scenes. Sasha is amazing, forget about book boyfriends I want her as my book bestie. She may have succumbed to the occasional moment of self-pity but given the circumstances, I couldn't blame her. For me, there was no effort required in reading the book, I just flew through the pages enjoying every moment of it. My one wish would have been to have either had a few more Sasha/Stefan scenes or to have maybe waited a little longer for the "L" word. I found it incredibly easy to overlook that just because of how much I adored everything else about the book.

I felt this book focused more on developing both Sasha and Charles' characters, as well as showing Sasha finding her place within magic and her new world. She still has some way to go in terms of establishing herself in the clan, as well as claiming her due respect, which just gives me so much to look forward to in the next book.

That ending lol

The book has a good bit packed in for a short read. The peers need taken down a peg. The ending goes from intense action to adorably cute.

Honestly, probably more like 4 1/2.

Braving the Elements was a fast, fun follow up to Into The Darkness. Sasha has moved into the Mansion inhabited by Stefan and his shadow people - like vampires, but not - race of magical warriors in order to start her magical training and remain protected from Stefan’s enemies who would love to get their hands on her. Sasha takes up residence with Charles remaining as her horny, knitting, bodyguard and sidekick – and much to his mortification he is forced to go back to magic school with her – because apparently he could use a little brush up.

Sasha starts off with high hopes of fitting in and making friends; which is something she has never had thanks to her weird intuitions and abilities. Sadly she doesn’t fit in at the mansion either because her humanity relegates her to the ranks of a trained dog; and The Boss’s attentions lead everyone to assume that she is his “pet” and yes, it is as insulting as it sounds. To make matters worse, Sasha struggles with even the most basic of lessons – and endures a good amount of ridicule from her classmates – who in fact are simply jealous because Sasha’s magical abilities surpass – well, basically everyone – she just has to learn to harness and direct her power.

I like Sasha. For the most part she is a fairly strong character. She gets emotional, but generally for reasonably good reasons and not excessively so. (Except for her little hissy fit directed at Stefan over the whole pet thing – I was disappointed that she hadn’t actually thought the whole thing through and basically had to crawl back with her trail between her legs). Otherwise, she’s resilient, independent, courageous and she kicks magical ass. The bantering between Sasha and her disgruntled watcher Charles remains entertaining; and Charles is becoming an even more endearing character.

This installment sees the relationship between Sasha and Stefan aka “The Boss” really heat up. He has tried to keep his distance for a multitude of reasons basically all pointing to a relationship with Sasha being a really bad idea – but they have shared a connection since they met and Stefan can’t quite seem to control himself when she’s around. They seem to have the whole fated for each other/soulmate thing going on; despite that Stefan is supposed to be mated to the evil Darla.

As the story progresses we learn more about Stefan’s people and their war with the Eastern Territories who have at their disposal Trek The (evil) White Mage – who’s magical power level rests…one level down from Sasha’s (who’s level is so high it’s basically considered to exist only in myth). As Braving The Elements closes it seems like everyone is going to be wanting Sasha. Stefan wants her for his mate, his people will undoubtedly want her to tip the scales in the war, the enemy still likely wants to use or neutralize her and Darla no doubt wants her dead as a doornail.

This installment did not contain any of the controversial non/dub con elements present in Into The Darkness. It was again a short, quick, engaging, entertaining read – these books are like m&m’s – definitely not Godiva – but still yummy and hard not to inhale.
