Have you ever read a book that is trying to be so woke and with the times, that it manages to date itself real badly and wind up not being as good of a commentary of the world as it attempted to be?

That perfectly describes Passion by Lauren Kate. Disclaimer: this is not my first time reading the series and it is not my first time reading this book. As a matter of fact, I discovered this book series between the release dates of Passion and Rapture back when I was in high school, and out of the three released books, Passion was actually my favorite.

That being said, there are certain aspects of this book that I can acknowledge age like milk. A lot of it has to deal with ethnocentrism with Luce's former lives and yes I do know that Bill makes a joke about it, but I argue that it doesn't right the wrong. Especially when this book is marketed to teens who probably have not or will attend an anthrpology course to understand that.

That being said, I feel like the time-traveling bits are some of the best parts of the book. Looking at how different incarnations are impacted by their environment. I wish Kate would do a little more of this in her other books and less of the same star-crossed lovers with bland personalities but you win some and you lose.

Now onward to Rapture! (With a small stop at the novella cause time-travel shenanigans).
