This was such a fun read! our fmc had me cracking up by page 3. Gwen is a 40 something year old curvy black tattoo artist who oozes badass energy. I loved that this wasn't your typical "witchy" read where the fmc didn't know magic existed and inherited a house and whole mess of magic to go along with it.

Gwen knows about magic and that her time is coming to an end due to a curse that she is determined to outrun. throw in some vampires and a sexy mysterious man who comes to her aide at just the right time and an ending that has you questioning what the heck just happened had me running to amazon to grab the next installment.

I was provided an arc of this book for free by the author and this is my honest review.

This short novella does a very good job of introducing the reader to the main character Gwen and setting up a fun adventurous tone for the world. Very true and familiar to the genre.

My favorite part is the voice. Its easy to feel like the ain character is a real person and to feel like you are getting her specific perspective of the world.

I also think that the other most significant character, Ash is mysterious and very likable.

Downsides are that i think the book needed quite a bit more editing on both a proofing and content level. It can be confusing at times, but not enough to make me DNF. I was also offered the next book and plan to start it soon. The ending left me very curious.

Wow that was fun! I can't say when I last read a book that was just enjoyable simply because. I will say that if lots of pop culture references aren't your thing, then you likely won't have as much fun with this novella as I did. I admit that sometimes those references took me out of the fantasy of it but they were fun nonetheless.

I found myself nodding along with Gwendolyn's sass and quick remarks. Her inner thoughts were always a joy and had me laughing more often than not. While she's often portrayed as a strong female lead, she definitely has those bouts of insecurity that make her relatable on so many levels.

Trying to outrun a curse that she doesn't really know much about and unsure of who to trust? What more could anyone want. Let's throw in some magic and monsters, and the sex on a page Ash? Sold. It packed everything I could want in a prequel and set up what I can assume will be the rest of the series, very nicely. It gave me enough of the world that I was interested, enough sass to be invested and love Gwen and an ending that has me salivating for more.

The book was fantastic to read but to hear Ruthie narrate this treasure was fantastic.   She brings this fabulous book to life.   Can’t wait to hear/read the next one.

This book was a breath of fresh air and absolutely hilarious. I love the fact that the characters were not so young, not so perfect, and had a sense of humor. I think my favorite line in the book was

"As far as I was concerned, demons should stay where they belonged -- in hell and Washington DC."

This book has a collection of vampires, otherworldly creatures, and one really hot man. All Gwen has to do is stay alive until her 45th birthday. Sounds easy, right?

Midlife isn’t supposed to be this dangerous.

Read this prequel novella and you will be hooked and waiting (not so) patiently for the next book. Reggie writes amazing stuff in this series set in a magical place called Hoodoo, Texas -- full of boudin, barbecue, and of course...Hoodoo.

You won't regret reading this book!

Gwen just wants to make it to her 45th birthday without the family curse killing her.   This novella was perfect.
