I honestly really loved this book. A great way to get your fix of 2000's political fantasy but finally one that is written by a woman. Truly a fantastic book, I highly recommend. The only reason it is four instead of five stars for me is probably just because of how often I had to double check the wiki about characters. The second book is coming in the mail next week and I am looking forward to reading it.
This book blew my damn mind. It was so, so good. An overwhelming amount of world building and names of people and places, but the plot and objectives were clear enough to follow. Phédre is such an incredibly complex main character. Her and her clan were all so well developed. Joscelin!!!! What an angel! He is an incredibly interesting and dynamic character, always at odds with his morals/oaths and heart. What a sweetie, for real. Hyacinthe too. I love a free spirit. Phédre, for all of the trouble she goes through, really has a solid group around her, and that warms my heart.
But for real this book has it all. I will be thinking about this one for a long time.

Kushiel's Dart is an absolutely masterpiece and I will never be the same again. I put off reading it for a long time as it is a monster of a book - over 1000 pages. But Jacqueline Carey's writing is so beautiful
it carries you through this dense and complex story of a submissive masochist courtesan trained as a spy, who discovers a plot to overthrow her beloved home (set in an alternative-history France and Europe). Phedre is an exceptional character, Joscelin is wonderful, and I'm still devastated by [spoiler]. A new favourite for sure.

DNF - Writing was decent but I hated how children were groomed to do sex work. Alcuin's treatment was especially awful to me, and I DESPISED the relationship Phèdre and Alcuin had with their "foster father" Delaunay. I don't give a damn if he "cared for them” or not. What he did was vile, and just straight abusive.
EDIT I just found out Alcuin and Delaunay become lovers later on. What the actual FUCK???
