This book really feels its age for me and I’m bored of books that rely on these devices. While maybe it would have held me if I’d read it when it came out, now I expect more from Fantasy
Been meaning to read this for a while as it was recommended to me by some people whose opinions I value. It did not dissapoint. Will be looking for more by this author.
thank god this book is over. i was so excited that it was 1000+ pages and only $6, that should have been a warning right there. here are my main issues with this book:
1) pacing. since this is the whole story (so far) of phedre's life, we start with birth. then blah blah blah blah blah forever and ever and ever. i appreciate carey's attempt to create a rich and detailed world, but she goes into SO much detail it is distracting, especially when she gets into the politics and the stupid ass names (i have no problem with fantasy names, but aside from the main characters, these were all totally unbearable to me - too similar). the only part i enjoyed mildly was the
escape from the Skaldi through the mountains
, but that seemed to be rushed, especially considering the time and detail spent on everything else.
2) sex. this is supposed to be an erotic novel, but the sex scenes were a) few and far between and b) didn't do a single thing for me. they are mostly just abuse, maybe it's just because i'm not into that, but sheesh.
3) love.
the 'romances' are stilted and forced. phedre and josscelin are totally unbelievable as lovers, just thrown together at the end to make things nice and neat. and their love scene seems to be just because carey got bored of writing about snow. hyachinthe was more believable as a love interest, at least they had a story. even alcuin and delauney's relationship has no depth or progression to it, it just isn't one day and is the next.
i have a hard time empathizing or enjoying a love story when it just comes out of nowhere.
4)sex again. is phedre into pain and submission, or just sex itself? carey can't seem to decide - sometimes is shame, sometimes pain, sometimes just because someone is there.
5) politics. the politics were hard to follow to me, maybe because i was just bored. however, i'm supposed to believe that evil characters brought to submission just by the power of phedre's cooter? pfft. yeah, okay.
all in all, this book was mostly work to get through.

Fantastic political drama mixed with deliciously hot erotica and fascinating gods and goddesses. Characters are all amazing and I'm invested in all of their stories. I absolutely loved this read and look forward to reading the next book!

DNF - I like the idea of this book, but it didn't resonate with me.
