This is my favorite book in The Giver Quartet (so far)!!! Gathering Blue had left me not wanting to read this book right now, but I'm glad I decided to read it anyway! Messenger ties the characters of The Giver and Gathering Blue together and explains some missing details of these characters as well. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!!

Wow it's been a while since I read this... I remember this as a kinda nice story but it just really wasn't for me I guess. Out of all the books this was probably third place for me because I did like it more than gathering blue.

Matty has grown up now and he knows Forest like the back of his hand. It is his job in Village to deliver all the messages to other communities. At least it was that way until dark forces start to poison village, and Forest starts to darken and thicken. Matty realises that this is his last chance to find Kira and bring her to Village to get reunited with her father.

I feel like that all I should say really but it does involve more of the strange gifts and slightly mystical powers acting on this futuristic world.

***** SPOILERS *****

The end just wasn't that great for me... I mean I didn't cry or anything when he died to save Forest and like the village and people but it was sad... I liked how Jonas and Kira seem to be hinting at falling love, that seems like it would be really sweet.

Ok now about the Trademaster... What even is that? I always thought of this books as futuristic but so far everything seemed very real... But here we really go into the supernatural... I hope that gets explained better in the next one.

I really don't know what else to say on this book really... So... End of rant.

A satisfying continuation of both The Giver and Gathering Blue, and yet, it takes away a bit of the mystery of those books that captured my imagination so many years after I first read these stories. I've re-read those two so many times, and will continue to do so. Messenger will probably be re-read less.

I thought that "Messenger" (the third in the trilogy) was much better than "Gathering Blue", but that "The Giver" is still the best of the three. Lowry creates societies where mass thought takes control of communities, and where individuals must not only question their roles, but also question what it is to be a just person while questioning the choices of their leaders, or of the masses. "Messenger" re-emphasizes a point that the other two books brought up--the importance of finding one's calling, or gift, and using it for the right reason. It tries to pull together all the little bits left unanswered from the first two companion books, and does a pretty good job of it. The author leaves some important details up to her reader's imaginations, much like "The Giver" and "Gathering Blue", but since this is the final book in a series, I wish she'd tied up the loose ends a little more neatly. Regardless, I love this series and I loved the Messenger.

A disappointing addition to The Giver and Gathering Blue. Hoping it was worth the read leading into Son.

The more I made the connection between this book and The Giver and Gathering Blue, the more I appreciated the skill of the author. Although short, this book addresses many of the unanswered questions of the first two books of the series. It took me a while to figure out that Matty was Kira's friend from Gathering Blue, and that the Leader was Jonas as an adult (who brought Gabe to the Village). Once these character's lives started to connect, I became more engrossed in the story. However, it also raises many of its own questions: What is the importance of trading? Who is the Trader? Why is the Forest changing? Why did the story end so abruptly? Sometimes it seems like the author is intentionally vague. Thankfully, we have another book in the series that will (hopefully) answer those questions. Looking forward to reading The Son.

I’ve read The Giver more times than I can remember and I’ve read Gathering Blue and Son before. Yet somehow, this was my first read of The Messenger. It just didn’t do much for me.
