In this third installment of The Great Library series, our group has escaped the burning of London only to be captured in Burner-city Philadelphia. In order to stay alive, Thomas and Jess have agreed to build the printing press for the burners while the others translate the archived books stolen from London. Philadelphia is a city under siege and has been for 100 years. The people do not have much in the way of supplies or food, but they are holding out against the Library's armies that surround the walls. Jess worries about his companions constantly, especially Morgan who is using her Obscurist powers to find a way out of the city. Jess will have to call on his smuggler family in order to get them out and it has unexpected and devastating consequences.
I was feeling a bit iffy about this series after the last book, but this one redeems. The action is pretty much nonstop between Philadelphia and the Brightwell estate. There is less focus on the romantic pairings and more focus on their mission to bring down the Library. My real quibble with this story was the part at the end with the Brightwells. In Philadelphia, everyone is working together toward a single goal. Everyone has their role to play and everyone knows what is going on. Suddenly, once they have escaped Philadelphia things change and Jess is playing a game no one else is aware of, but he is playing it with their lives. At this point in the series I found this a bit tiresome. Everyone knows what is at stake and should have been involved in the decision-making process. The fact that Jess keeps most of the group in the dark and gambles with everyone's lives without their knowledge didn't make sense in the overall scheme of things. One would think they would be more helpful if they knew what was expected of them and where things were going. Other than that, I thought this was an excellent book to move the series along. I can't wait to see what happens in the next volume.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley.

While the story is still intriguing this segment has a great deal of unnecessary and irrelevant interactions between the characters in other words fluff without substance. I found myself often skimming past these boring sections.
This started out as a really strong YA series and I feel like it could have been wrapped up in a trilogy. But this is apparently number 3 of 5. I felt like it dragged a bit and the best part of the action was saved for a cliffhanger ending. I'm invested enough to finish this series through, but only just. Hopefully the next installment has more action.
I wasn't entirely in the mood for a dark book, so I had a tough time getting into Ash & Quill, though I'd been looking forward to it. Be warned, this is a typical rising action book--the end is still coming, so the tension is ratcheted up.
It's still an amazing world, where the written word is magic, but knowledge is greedily hoarded by the Library. Thieves and fanatics try to steal it away and destroy the tyrant, and our group of heroes trying to reform from within are beset on all sides. It's not an easy story, but it has something to say, and holds some glimmer of hope for a win. But it won't be a simple victory, or without cost.

Words can kill.
Quite true. Int his installment of The Great Library series, Jess Brightwell and his friends are held hostage in the burner capital of the world and he comes up with a dangerous plan to officially rebel against The Library.
Smart and so wonderfully detailed. This book keeps you so close to Jess and I really liked that. All of his questionable decisions aren't without merit and explanation and you don't get that understanding from characters very often. I loved how fast this boo moved and that it left me on the edge of my seat. Like before, there were twists and secrets that took me by surprise.

Another exciting adventure for our team of renegades! This time, we get a closer look at the life of the Burners in their headquarter city of Philadelphia. The stakes are higher than ever and neither side is backing down. I look forward to the next book.
I’m continuing to enjoy this series. Looking forward to beginning the next book.
I've been really intrigued by this series and it hasn't let me down. Another wonderful book by the amazing Rachel Caine that will leave you immersed inside a world that is trying to kill you from all sides.
The first part of the book, our group of exiles find themselves imprisoned in Philadelphia. They must escape before the Great Library wipes out the city. The second half of the book takes us through a more in depth issue within the Great Library its self. Boom! Mind blown.
I loved this read and all the twists and turns I was taken through. It was worth the wait.
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

OH MY GOD
*ENDLESS SCREAMING*
*RUNS FOR THE NEXT BOOK*
(I'm terrified to read Book 4 because once I do, that's it, I'm stuck waiting the ENDLESS WAIT until the final book's release in the fall. And if Book 4 ends anything like Book 3...OH GOD.)

I seriously love the ingenuity of these kids! Whilst imprisoned in Philadelphia, they somehow manage to get out of a bad situation with scraps that they turn into cool inventions, as well as brain power. I love the way the characters all work together as a team and can't wait to see where the next book with take us.
