Finally getting around to reading J.P. Barnaby, and I wish I'd gotten to it sooner. You can find a full review on my blog.

2.5 Not a bad story, but what niggled me was the ending. It just...stopped.
Then there was Josh. Very sweet young man. But his character felt more like a little child than a grown man. It almost felt as if he needed someone to tie his shoe laces. While sweet, I find that submissive doesn't mean completely dependable. Or it's just me, wanting my submissives with a little more spirit and spunk ;-)

I really wanted to rate this book higher. The writing is very good, the sex scenes are hot, the characters are vivid and well drawn; Barnaby is great at giving you people you care about in short order. The situation is one that both speaks to my interests and immediately drew me in and Barnaby's extensive knowledge about BDSM comes through without making her reader choke on a lot of exposition; it's incorporated naturally and well. Based on all those things alone, it was a great story and I'm looking forward to reading more of Barnaby's work.

My one complaint, the one that knocks this down a star, is that there's absolutely no conflict to the story, no real obstacle to the resolution and that makes it all a little too simple, a little unsatisfying. I want the characters I care about to have their happy ending, of course I do, but I want them to have to work (or suffer) to get there. And though there's an implied conflict in Josh and Wade's pasts, it's 90% off-screen; it mainly happens before the story happens and, once Josh and Wade meet, it's all perfect and easy from there, which...I just wanted a little more. I know it's a short story, but even in a short, I want a little conflict.

But I do plan to look into Barnaby's longer works, because there aren't enough authors who write this well, with or without kink.
