Really beautiful, soothing art, and a story that holds up even with this book's age, in my opinion! Normalizing every kind of family structure is evergreen.
The controversial classic - what a lovely story about family and how many different ways they can be put together. The illustrations are simple pencil drawing and perfect to the story. Not only that but a good story on first going to daycare or preschool.
The author read this whole book aloud to us at the Outlawed conference and I wish I had had it as a kid, because I had heterosexual adoptive parents and this book is actually about a bunch of kids in play group drawing pictures and describing their families, and every kind of family is in it and that's all the end it's great.
Yesss I loved this. I loved with the teacher did and how she made them see that it was okay to have a different family than what everyone was used to. Definitely worth a read if you haven't read it yet!
When Heather gets to school she wonders if she is the only one without a daddy. The teacher has them draw pictures of their families and Heather finds out that all families are different and that the most important thing is that everyone in the family loves each other. The delightful water color pictures perfectly illustrate, not only the differences in families, but in individuals too.
This was written to show kids that families are all unique and valid. My only complaint was that my professor said that the newest version of this book would have the moms wearing rings but I didn’t see it in this version, maybe it’s in the paperback version.
It's amazing how much controversy was made about a book that promotes nothing but the importance of loving families.
The whimsical illustrations of this edition enhance the story of Heather and her two mommies; I love the way this picture book depicts the diversity in ALL the families at Heather's school...amazing!
"Each family is special. The most important thing about family is that all the people in it love each other."

This book was suggested to me by a friend when I asked for favorite books for pride month. It's a picture book and probably too young for my daughter who is almost 8, but I found it at the library anyway and I'm so happy I did! What an adorable book. It would be great for a young child starting school for the first time because it shows the first day of school and also confirms that all family configurations can be good.
Also, it turns out that my girl had already heard this story and strongly recommended I read it because she loved it. That made me happy too!
