So beautifully written. Emotional. Reading it the first time takes you on a journey with the characters. Reading it a second time gives you a deeper understanding of them.

 ** spoiler alert ** 4.25 stars <3

i honestly loved this so much. i watched the film before reading the novel, and i really liked seeing each character in my head so vividly. absolutely loved tom and patrick's relationship, but not marion at all. i stand for all marion slander!!! L character fr.

the fact we got to see patrick's journal entries was so exciting. i only wish we got to see tom's point of view, as done with patrick and marion. that would've made the book so much better, tbh.

hated that marion never apologized to patrick nor attempted to get him out of prison, given he obviously did not deserve to be there. and tom not attempting to help either whatsoever. patrick needed him and tom abandoned him completely. L tom.

overall, loved this so much and the entire storyline. i am constantly thinking about it after seeing the movie months earlier. i'm so glad we have a book version too<3

Like probably many, I came to My Policeman following on from watching the Amazon Prime adaptation.

One theme of this story that I haven't been able to shake is the devestating notion of wasted/lost time. Just the idea of "if only this thing was different then imagine what my life could have been."

My Policeman is split into two timelines: Marian talking to present day Patrick about how she met  Tom and all their adventures together as a trio in the past, and Patrick's diary entries from the time. While very much infuriating, I find Marian a very complex and interesting character, so it was interesting to see those gaps from the film filled in by getting a deeper insight into her perspective of the world and the situations she finds herself in.

I wish there was more of Patrick's diaries as I found those sections the most enjoyable to read and they really hammered home how difficult it was to be LGBT at the time.

Ehat I found interesting (and something I wish I could ask the author about) is that, while Tom is central to a lot of the emotions in the story, we don't get to read his direct perspective. He seems to exist on the outskirts which I guess could be seen as feeding into how he keeps himself iscolated because of his own feelings.

This book is beautiful and definitely wort a read.

first 100 pages or so were quite slow but then this really picked up, think i prefered patricks sections to marions. a very emotional, hard hitting read and it made me very sad, but also was so good and relatable

An incredibly touching book that will stick with me for a long time. One of the best examples of how love can truly devastate and destroy.
