I watched the movie first, so I needed more in this book. Did it for me I’ve been in a reading slump since April and I feel so ready to read now and truly enjoyed the themes and love portrayed this book.

I wanted to rate this book higher and I wanted to like it more. I feel if it was not for it’s nature and it’s historical lens I would not have finished it.
While emotional and evocative I found the characters to be superficial and skirted around the real issues and complications of the time. It would have been great to have a perspective from Tom. I think that would have deepened my investment in the book and made it more evocative.
I enjoyed the closure that came from the end and the slight unresolved nature of the characters. I feel this is like real life… with many things left unsaid and regrets present when one experiences the death of those “close” to them.
The book is reflective but jumps a around a little. I would have enjoyed more historical context.
Overall I would recommend to Queer readers but caution them about high expectations.

I was expecting to like this book more than I did. It felt like it dragged on quite a bit in certain parts. The dual perspectives were interesting and I liked the content I just didn’t connect to the writing very much. The ending left me slightly unsatisfied as well
