I didn’t know as much as I thought about the Trojan War. I studied the Aeneid at school and learnt about the Trojan horse. Names such as Hector, Achilles, Priam and Agamemnon were familiar to me. But I had no idea of the complex, convoluted and crazy histories of these and many other characters. The sheer number of people who appear in this book makes it, as Fry acknowledges repeatedly, impossible to remember exactly who everyone is (not to mention who their fathers, cousins and brothers-in-law are) but this is the first time I have had a sense of the enormous scale of Greek mythology, and the many ways in which so many of the characters are connected to each other. I’m a bit overwhelmed by it all actually, but delighted to have reacquainted myself with these stories accompanied by such an enthusiastic and amusing guide.
2.5 stars. I do love Stephen Fry's writing, he is a very engaging writer. However this book just wasn't for me. I love to get involved with the characters, to relate to them, but there were far too many to even attempt to do that with.
The multitude of footnotes was also too much for me. I can tolerate them in the Discworld books because they make me smile.
I wouldn't not recommend this book, I'm sure there are those who would love it. However this is just not for me.

Stephen Fry does it again, and continues to prove he's my favorite narrator. The only problem I have is that it seems like this is the last one, even though I'd love an Odyssey or Aenead.

4.5*
