Better off Dead

Lee Child

This is my second Jack Reacher book after watching the show on Amazon. The books are easy to read with a straightforward plot that focuses mainly on the action side of the proceedings. They’re fine for what they are but beyond that, they offer very little in my experience.

If you know you want to read an action-heavy plot, centring around a one-man wrecking crew. Then Reacher is the character for you. This is fine and can be enjoyable in spades. However, after only two books in the series, one at each end of the timeline, the plot of Jack Reacher saves the day time and time again has already gotten boring.

Even when the odds are heavily stacked against him, Reacher pulls through. Even when the weight of the world is on his shoulders, Reacher pulls through. Even when faced with a gang of armed militia who are on strict orders of ‘shoot to kill’ guess what? Yep, Reacher pulls through.

The books are easy to read so they tick that box. Written well, besides the constant short sentences. With unnecessary descriptions. Throughout. Making it choppy in places. It’s fine for what it is.

Overall a fine book if you’re looking for an over-the-top action book where the good guy rides high time after time. Facing no real jeopardy, because he’s written to be the best at everything. From fighting to thinking and everything in between, Jack Reacher seems to know it all. Three stars for the enjoyment and speed I read the book.

Pretty disappointing tbh. I've read a few Reacher books before, and you know what you're getting - it's an action/thriller type book, with usual gruff Reacher beating the shit out of people and no one really caring that a lot of dead bodies always seem to pile up.

And this was that. But, the short descriptives sentences went too far. Reacher's apparent bafflement over an iphone passcode went too far. The denouement was rushed and far-fetched.

Maybe once you've written 20 odd books this is inevitable, or maybe it's the transition over to Child writing with his brother. But I don't really recommend this one, pick up a different Reacher instead.

I am a huge fan of Jack reacher. This is the second "and Andrew Child" Reacher that I have started and put down without finishing. Read 16% and 12% of the books before decding not to waste my time. Reacher without Lee Child is not worth reading. Sorry to see Reacher go. I found a similar situation when Vince Flynn died and the Mitch Rapp series continued with Kyle Mills.

It’s a good airplane book. Something to entertain yourself while you’re waiting to do something else.

Zero character development and no real motivation for characters to do anything other than be where they need to be at a given point in the story to propel the story forward.

Plot heavy. It’s easy to see why this is a popular series as there is very little objectionable in terms of what the characters do think or say.

It's just not the same writing anymore. I can tell that it's not Lee Child writing and it's just so disappointing. The books started off with such a bizarre plot and Reacher just going along with it.

When I pick up a thriller, I’m always looking for that feeling I had as a child when I read Five go to Smugglers Top. You can’t put the book down, you just have to read the next chapter or you won’t sleep. Your legs feel like jelly, you think a creaking sound in your home might be a murderer and you jump almost visibly as you read the plot twist.

This book was an easy read and slightly made me feel like jelly. Not an Enid Blyton though!

I didn’t quite love this book as much as I did some of the others but I still enjoyed it.
Had all the good reacher bits in that I love.
