Ever felt that time was zipping by so fast there wasn't enough to do the things you wish? Maybe it's more than just poor time management.

Pretty good story; I'm curious to see what she does with the other two in the series.

Quick, straightforward read. A coming of age story, if you will. JJ goes on a quest to buy his mother more time for her birthday. There’s not a whole lot that stands out but the plot is nice and simple with a happy-ish ending.

Each chapters starts with a short medley, which according to the authors notes at the back of the book, each medley is an actual traditional Irish tune, which was also fascinating.

JJ and his family have been noticing a strange phenomenon lately - they seem to be running out of time. When JJ finds an entrance to the faerie world, he begins to uncover the reason behind the time problem and sets about fixing it.

This was a wonderful audiobook with short musical pieces between each chapter. Music has a lot to do with the story and it was delightful to hear the pieces. My only complaint is that I believe JJ was supposed to be 15 years old, but he sounded a lot younger than that. That could have to do with the narrator, but still... If you like Irish music, check out this audiobook!

Words can't even describe how much I love this book. I picked it up randomly about ten years ago because I liked the title (good tune, that) and when I realized it was about trad music I fell immediately in love.
It's also one of the few books that I can wholeheartedly recommend the audiobook for as well, so you can hear the tunes being played.
(Oh, and Dowd's No. 9 is one of my favourite tunes and I will never stop playing it, so you can blame this book for that too)

I wasn't sure what to expect with this story, but I liked it. There were some questions left unanswered, but the conclusion was fitting.

In The New Policeman, JJ attempts to get his mother the perfect gift for her birthday--time. In the process, he discovers a parallel universe into which all his lost time has been leaking and unravels a few family mysteries while he's at it. This book is generally considered a fantasy novel (as it should with the parallel universes and such) but as an avid fantasy reader, it didn't do much for me. The book was fairly predictable and not all that exciting. I never felt that the stakes were set very high or that a lot was at risk. (Even though a lot was apparently at risk, I just never felt it.) I did like all the references to Irish music and Irish culture throughout the book, but I wish I had known that I could listen to the music printed in the book online while I was reading it. I'm a good enough musician to be able to read music, but not so good of a one that I can look at sheet music and piece together how it is supposed to sound, and I felt like I was missing an important aspect of the book because I couldn't do that.

At first this book was slow going for me, it seemed to have no real bad guy, not enough suspense, and not a huge problem.

But eventually it got better. I loved the music at the beginning of each chapter, that was a really cool idea!

But, the part that annoys me most, is when SPOILER!!!!!! J.J. runs into this goat like creature who threatens him, scares him, and tells him the people he trust are liars and not to trust them. He had me going for a while, but there was no learning anything else about that goat. It happened and then disappeared. No "should I believe him?" No, "what if the goat is right" Just "whatever, you're gone now, loser"

Kate Thompson could've added a lot to that part, I thought it was a great idea to write that part in, but then she never expanded on it.

Aside from that, I really enjoyed this book.

I am 13.
