Before Mars

Emma Newman

4.17 AVERAGE

Another solid entry in Emma Newman's unfailingly inventive and affecting Planetfall series. Once again she is able to tell a hard sci fi story involving a dark but quite plausible dystopian future without recycling a lot of cliches and with people who seem entirely real and confront genuine problems--not just directly related to the plot.

Geologist and artist Anna Kubrin has just arrived on Mars for a one-year assignment for GaborCorp, one of the richest & most influential corporations on Earth. She's just come off the six-month journey, and is joining a small crew of 4. But when she finds a cryptic warning in her own handwriting planted in her quarters, and comes across a footprint in an unexplored sector, Anna starts to ask herself questions: what has she wandered into? And what lies in store for her and for the little family she's left behind on Earth?

An excellent, claustrophobic psychological thriller/mystery set on Mars. Very well plotted and executed. Some things may be clear to the reader before they're clear to Anna (particularly for the reader that's read earlier books in the series), but the full scope unfolds at a good pace. Also definitely packs an emotional punch!

What I really enjoy about Newman’s writing is that she gives her protagonists involved personal stories in the midst of the sci-fi thriller/mystery setting. In this case, our main character is a woman who has suffered from postpartum depression, I’d say, though it isn’t named. And the shame and guilt caused by the fact that she doesn’t experience motherhood with much joy or excitement. I found the first book of this series more well done plot-wise, however. I don’t know how mysterious the plot was supposed to be for this book, but if you’ve read the first two you know where this one is going pretty early on. It sucked a lot of the suspense and tension out of this book. I’m still interested in reading the next one to see what else she comes up with.

So I struggled with this book initially. The first half was filled with me wondering where is this going and why should I stay connected with it. There were signals around a big thing, but the book just seemed to have no pace towards providing detail. Halfway through it went up in gear significantly and I got into it. I’m certainly curious about the other books in the world setting now

This was an engaging read. I like how the series is being built and where it I can go.
I keep forgetting what happened in the other books, the different angles of the book make it harder to remember, apart from that I have little complaints.
