I loved the message of courage and autonomy vs fear and dependence that this story illustrates. Very inspiring.

Writing was very well done, the author clearly cares about the characters and their development, there was no point where the story felt rushed nor taking too long. I learned partway through the book that it a part of a trilogy, however, the book can be read as a stand alone.

I did really enjoy this book but I think I struggled following at points due to listening to the audiobook. The names had a tendency to sound similar at the speed I listened to

“All my life,” she said, “I have been told ‘go’ and ‘come.’ I am told how I will live, and I am told how I must die. I must be a man’s servant and a mare for his pleasure, or I must hide myself behind walls and surrender my flesh to a cold, silent god. I would walk into the jaws of hell itself, if it were a path of my own choosing. I would rather die tomorrow in the forest than live a hundred years of the life appointed me.”
I liked this book. Quite a bit, actually.
The prose was beautiful, the characters interesting, the world well-crafted. I enjoyed all the legends woven into it, but something was missing for me. The ending was a bit rushed and I think that was what ultimately added to this being a 3-star read for me instead of a 4-star one.

Recommended to me as a fan of Naomi Novik, this hauntingly dark and enchanting fairy tale did not disappoint. Rich and chilling with deep winter magic, it draws from the legend of the Frost King and beautifully blends Russian folklore with Slavic mythology. Through lyrical prose, it weaves historical fiction and fantasy, exploring themes of courage, strength, faith, identity, and gender roles.

We just aren’t going to acknowledge that the main character is 14 and some stuff was fucking weird for her age but whatever
