All of the movie adaptations of this spend so much time on swashbuckling but greatly neglect how often these incompetent oafs cannot independently manage their money or dinner plans.

You know how, when you’re a kid, you love the Three Musketeers movie? It’s full of action and adventure and you want to be a musketeer too!
Then when you’re an adult, you read the book and realize Milady de Winter was horribly abused and assaulted and it’s no wonder she’s hell bent on destroying every man she comes in contact with.
Like Count of Monte Cristo, it’s a great book with the story and quality of writing. The subject manner and views held by the men are troublesome, I know it was written well over 170 years ago, and then set some 200+ years before that even and things were different then (ie: even more horrible than now for anyone not in a position of power), so it is what it is.

Lady de Winter is the most interesting part of this entire thing.
The Musketeers often annoyed me as they were super selfish at various points throughout the story. They casually go about murdering people and the whole situation was a bit bizarre. I will get around to Count of Monte Cristo at some point but I’m glad I read this first to acquaint myself with Dumas before tackling that behemoth.

This book was such a fantastic surprise. I thought i was going to have to endure through 10's of pages about the battles endure and wars fought, instead i found myself reading a people orientated books. Every character could be sympathised with, even the cardinal and each one had a rich background with many layers to them. I even enjoyed the trivial round up of their war gear/etc :)

I think it's fascinating that the big bad of this novel was a court lady who was extremely cunning and good at acting.

It was pretty good, not the best I've ever read
