I loved this book when I first read it 9 years ago and I loved it even more this time. In 2014, I hadn't even written any fanfic, and hadn't read any for years. I had no context for the stats of Carry On and didn't understand the significance of that online world. I hadn't been diagnosed with bipolar yet, so I didn't know why Cath's dad's story hit so hard. I knew a little about writer's block, but not like I do now. Back then, I'd almost never had deadlines for creative writing, just the sort that came with high school and I'd always found those assignments easiest. I've changed a lot in the last 9 years, and it feels like many of the ways I've changed have been in ways that make it easier to relate to this book.

The story of Fangirl is simple and beautiful: a girl goes to college and it's hard. It's such an intensely rich cast of characters--though the romance is integral to the plot, the plot doesn't thin out when it's not concerned with Levi. In fact, Cath's world is almost overwhelmingly full, despite her introverted ways. And despite those introverted ways, despite her anxiety, she slowly learns that she is equal to the challenges that come with her life. She matures immensely over the book, she learns independence and self-worth, and I love that this does *not* mean giving up fandom. Her love for writing and for the fictional book series she's obsessed with isn't something to overcome, it's the first way she learned to love without restraint and express herself without thinking, and it's something that will always be precious to her. I also love that Levi loves and supports her in this hobby without condition.

It wasn't really a book I would normally read. I had heard it was really good, but I didn't see myself reading it. Then I read the sample on Barns and Noble.com and it was amazing, so I bought it. At times it was a little slow for me, but overall it was a good book and I'm glad I read it.

Well... I finally read a Rainbow Rowell book. I kept putting it off because she just got so overhyped and it put me off. But one day I said screw and picked this one up. I really enjoyed the complexity of it. It was well written and I was not confused at all. The character development was really good as well. I definitely want a Levi of my own :p I wouldn't say this book deserves maybe all the hype it got but it really was a good read.

Honestly, when I first starting reading this book, I couldn’t get into it. I don’t know if was simply because I was starting a new book or I was afraid it wouldn’t live up to expectations.

I will say, it actually went above expectations.

I expected this book to just be another ‘girl struggles with switching from high school to college’ when in reality, it is so much more. I honestly want to know what happens next with these characters.
