This was another good book by Sue Grafton. I just love the characters. I enjoy listening to the books as the plot unfolds. I am glad they keep the same narrator so far. The ending wasn't as I suspected again to me is always a bonus.

Kinsey is entirely too smug.

Well read by Mary Peiffer.

D is for Deadbeat is the 4th installment of Sue Grafton’s Alphabet. Surprise, surprise… this one is the best yet. This time Kinsey Milhone takes on a case she really wishes she hadn’t. It started easily enough, just track down a kid and give him a cashier’s check. But it was not as easy as it seemed. (I know, I was shocked too!) Turns out the man giving the check was… less than savory, and the kid doesn’t want the money. People Kinsey met when they were alive end up dead and she has multiple suspects that kind of fit the description she’s been given, but don’t feel quite right. The best part? The cops don’t think there has been any crime until the second body drops so Kinsey has to use her contacts sneakily, instead of being up front about her questions. There is also a little bit of romance, just to keep everyone confused about Kinsey’s love life, including, I’m guessing, Kinsey.

I really enjoyed D is for Deadbeat. Kinsey is starting to really develop as a character, beyond the typical hard boiled crime fighter she started out as.

2018 Reading Challenge- Read a legal thriller.

The Kinsey Millhone series continues to be a pretty solid crime/thriller mystery. I'd argue the best part about the series is how well it holds up. For a book written 30-ish years ago, it's not very dated or obviously out of date. I like the way Grafton crafts her mysteries, with lots of twists and turns and new evidence popping up regularly, and Kinsey is a likable sleuth. I think my favorite thing about Kinsey is that she seems like a normal person- not a super smart crime solving genius, just a regular person who works hard to solve crimes. This mystery wasn't my favorite and I didn't really like the characters introduced but otherwise this was a quick read. I thought the end wrapped up too quickly (for my tastes at least) but overall I thought this was a solid mystery read.

I think listening actually made this book feel much longer, but it had the same vibes as the previous three in the series. The chapter ends did feel very abrupt and sometimes not at logical places.
