I learned a lot about the history of the intelligence services and how they started. I particularly enjoyed reading about WW2 from such a unique perspective.

EVERYONE should read this book!! The History alone is invaluable, but it’s written in such a page turner fashion that even the most everyday tasks and events made me feel like I was one of the gals right there. And then comes the work being done!!! Wow, the pride, the loyalty, the patriotism just made me realize how Great that Generation is/was and that they deservedly have been given that title! I’m happy the women are finally getting their hard work & dedication recognized too!

In Code Girls, Liza Mundy delivers an impeccably researched and deeply moving account of the women who played a pivotal role in the success of the Allied efforts during World War II. This compelling narrative brings to light the extraordinary, yet often overlooked, contributions of female codebreakers at the United States Army's Signal Intelligence Service.

Mundy’s storytelling is both rich and accessible, intertwining the historical significance of these women’s work with their personal stories of resilience, intellect, and determination. By focusing on the lives of these "Code Girls," Mundy not only highlights their brilliance but also sheds light on the gender barriers they broke in a male-dominated field, changing the landscape of women’s roles in the workplace and in history.

The book balances meticulous detail with heartfelt emotion, painting vivid portraits of the young women who left their colleges and families behind to serve their country in secretive roles that would only be fully appreciated decades later. Their work—decoding enemy transmissions—was crucial to the success of the war and saved countless lives, though it remained classified for many years. Mundy’s dedication to uncovering their stories makes Code Girls an essential read for anyone interested in the hidden history of WWII and the untold stories of extraordinary women who shaped the course of history.
What stands out most is Mundy’s ability to highlight not just the intellectual rigor required for such a task, but the emotional toll these women faced as they navigated the intense pressure of their work in secrecy, often under the shadow of a war that required them to work in isolation and sacrifice much of their personal lives.

By the end of Code Girls, readers are left with a sense of awe at these women’s contributions, and perhaps even more importantly, a recognition of their rightful place in history. Mundy’s meticulous attention to detail and her genuine empathy for the women whose stories she tells make this book a powerful and necessary read.

For anyone fascinated by history, women's achievements, or the untold stories of WWII, Code Girls is nothing short of essential reading. Liza Mundy has created an inspiring tribute to the intelligence, resilience, and courage of these unsung heroines.
