Ok. I loved this. What does this book exactly fall into? It has folklore, mermaids, slow-burn "enemies" to lovers, an adventure (that does not go well), murder mystery, magic, fairies, sapphic dark-ish academic, rivalries... the list goes on and on.
I love love me a romatasy stand alone.
I am defiantly going to be checking out more books by Saft.

I could not, for the life of me, care about a single character or plot point.

В результаті. Саме любовна лінія змазала враження від історії та знизила мені оцінку до трійки. Краще воно було б чуттєвою невизначеністю, ніж:
- логічна в своєму корені персонажка двічі довго дивиться на певні речі й не помічає очевидних штук, це смішно й недолуго;
- сцена сексу, яка була недоречна, всунута в книгу бо так треба (кому?).
Проте атмосфера чудова, холодні джерела, темні ліси та химерні створіння з німецького фольклору - саме те, чого я шукала. Однозначно почитаю ще щось у авторки.

This book really grabbed me at the beginning, then slowed down a few chapters later. It was a good story, but the ending lacked a certain umph. Good book overall, but the author wasted some potential

An interesting mix of fairytale we all know and love layered within a fantasy world. I will not deny that the Yeva and their lore strongly parallels that of real world Jews and racism is a real problem the FMC faces. Their myth of the gollum is directly pulled from Jewish tales and they even include the title of Rabbi for the priest.
The romance part was a bit harder to believe. Lorelei often comes off as self absorbed but incredibly anxious about how others view her. She wants to be the bad guy so bad but it doesn't match her desperate need for being placed on an alter of respect. Sylvia is the only one who seems to see through this but it seems pretty obvious. So we are left to assume that the only reason others can't see it is because they are blinded by their racism.
