I was pleasantly surprised by how engrossed I became with "A Dance of Lies" by the end of my reading experience. A Dance of Lies is very light on the fantasy aspects (but I do think, based on where it ends, the second in this duology? will lean a little more on the fantasy aspects of this world) and focuses more on court/political intrigue.
Vasalie has been wrongly imprisoned and framed for murder. When offered the opportunity of freedom in exchange for being a spy for the king, whom she was once in love with, but is also the man who framed her.
She was frustratingly slow to unravel the plots happening at court, and kept forgetting about clues that she saw until it was too late. My biggest problem when reading romatasy is I am SO much more fascinated with the plot than the romance. Me and my minimal attraction to men did not think that those guys should have been so distracting to Vasalie with all the DRAMA happening in court. Especially the love SQUARE she had going on for a second. GIRL, you are being framed for murder PRIORITIES.
Still, I found myself enjoying it way more than I expected. The plot picks up very fast when the third brother arrives about halfway through. The plots all start coming to fruition, and Vasalie finally gets her head on a little bit straight.
I had thought that this was a standalone, but after the ending, I discovered it was a duology. I think? So be warned, new problems will be found right at the last minute.

After knowing it's a story revolving around a dancer and a king—I was SOLD. However, I almost paused reading this book because I'm not a fan of slow burns. But I trusted the process, and oh the plot burns so well. The plot mostly revolve politics, it's full of manipulation, betrayals, and survival. The romantic aspect did not come until half or 60% through the book. I think book two will serve us more of that. It is also slow paced for world building that I get that is necessary for the plot.

And speaking of book two, I hope it will be published soon, I'm already so intrigued with the politics in this book added with the slow burn and forbidden aspects of love story between mcs. If you're a fan of that, then I recommend it.

I love dancer x king romance tropes.

I really enjoyed this for the politics and romance. vasalie and anton are great and I loved the banter between them. I'm glad about the potential storyline for the sequel because it will be interesting with Antons memory loss and distortion. I can't wait to see what happens next

some of the characters like illian and vasalies father were good villains but I don't care much for them or the other characters as much. 4.5
