”For Black girls, now and always” 🤎

This was a great collection of short stories about Black girlhood and womanhood, divided into 4 themes: innocence, belonging, love and self-discovery. I enjoyed some stories more than others, but I think that’s pretty much expected with any anthology. I love how the editor chose Zora Neale Hurston’s How It Feels to be Black as the epilogue to remind us that our Blackness doesn’t have to be viewed as a tragedy.

My faves were Toni Morrison’s Recitatif, Alexia Arthur’s Bad Behavior and Paule Marshall’s Reena.

(updating reviews for some of my recent reads!)

during my sophomore year of college (spring 2020) I read "well-read black girl" for one of my extra credit opportunities and I absolutely loved it. fast forward two years and I'm just as obsessed with "on girlhood"! glory edim did a fanTASTIC job of picking out these short stories and I love how each one had discussion questions at the end. in the beginning, I made an effort to take notes on each question and get my thoughts down but then I sort of fell off LMAOOOO.

overall I gave this 4.5/5 stars and would DEFINITELY recommend!

This short stories collection covers wide variety of experiences and perspectives that are all apart of blackness! Each writer held their own and it’s so nice to have these writers all together in one spot!

15 stories featuring some of literature's well known as well as lesser known black women from past and present and their short stories that make you want to read more. Each story was just the right pick for this particular book, and such a great job was done by all involved.
