Competent but its flaws made it distasteful to me personally. In order to like this I would have had to be a lot more interested in Guy's character and internal struggle, and more forgiving of the weird homophobia hanging around Bruno's character. As things stand, the prose got overly florid and pretty uninteresting by the end. The only bright spot was that
SpoilerAnne obviously murdered Bruno, right?

The beginning and the ending are alright, but the middle was quite tiresome.

I thought I knew the premise going in, but it turned out to be more nuanced than I expected. It was an interesting read overall.

However, I could have done without the antiquated homophobic subtext.

If you like thrillers, this book is almost unbearably tense. I felt drawn inexorably toward all its awful events, and even if they seemed unlikely when looking back, the book really convinces you that it would unspool that way. Impressive feat, even if I found it honestly unpleasant to experience much of the time.
