I liked the build up in this one but the ending was kind of a jumble. I'm hoping the third one is a good transition from it.

Spice Rating: đź«‘ / 5 🌶️

I didn't think it could get any better than Caraval, but I'm so glad that Legendary proved me wrong.

Just a few short days after the events of book 1, Legend is hosting another Caraval in Valenda, where the empress resides. Legend has never held Caraval twice in one year, and having two Caravals within days of each other is completely unheard of. Donatella (Tella), Scarlett's sister, convinces Scarlett to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, where the winner of the game will get to meet Legend face-to-face. However, once the events get started, Tella finds herself on her own. Scarlett goes MIA, only Dante appears to care about her, and her fake fiancé might be out to get her. In order to win, Tella will have to make one of the most important choices, and possibly sacrifices, of her life.

I haven't read Once Upon a Broken Heart yet, but I'm really excited to see more of Jacks because I loved his character in this novel! I was somewhat surprised that Dante turned out to be Legend, but I feel like the hints were there if you paid attention to some of the small details in the story.

I cannot get enough of Stephanie Garber's writing! She has such poetic prose that creates such an imaginative world readers can easily picture in their heads. I'm starting Finale asap because I just have to know what happens.

I was a bit nervous when I realized that Legendary switched to Tella’s perspective, as I really connected with Scarlett. However, I soon started to love Tella even more! She really is much smarter than anyone gives her credit for, and it was intriguing to learn the backstory of the first novel and see the differences between Tella versus Scarlett’s interpretation of her. Her disinterest in love and marriage resonated with me in particular, and her trauma after the events of Caraval was integral to the continuation of the larger story.

Overall, Legendary was much more predictable than Caraval, specifically Legend’s identity. I was hesitant for the plot to revolve around a second Caraval and whether that would be too repetitive. However, this ended up adding a new dynamic to the story, as the nature of this Caraval was very different, and I was much less trusting of what was real and what was not.

I have mixed feelings about the new characters and the larger worldbuilding. Unsurprisingly, I loved Jacks and Dante, and I knew from the first book that there was more to Paloma’s story than Scarlett believed. Learning about the different Fates was a lot of fun, but I don’t feel like I got enough background information about them and how their magic works to be as invested in the expanded setting as I was with the more isolated Caraval. I also really wish to have seen more of Scarlett and Julian’s interactions directly!

Legendary was *insert gif* legen - wait for it - dary!

This book was straight chaos in the best way! I had an absolute blast reading it, and discussing it with my fellow buddy readers.

I had a blast reading Tella’s POV, learning more about the world, and experiencing Caraval again. The world building felt a little underdeveloped in book one, so I was glad to see more in this book.

Can’t wait to finish the series! 4 stars.

how is everyone in this book hot. everyone.
DANTE— marry me. please.

*clears throat*
so, anyways. i don’t have much to say. i enjoyed tellas perspective, it made me come to understand and enjoy her character a lot more. just as with caraval, i was confused throughout— well, the whole book really. to the point i’m at right now.
i had some theories. they were all wrong.
what i also had were CHILLS. because DANTE (i know i’m repeating myself but hang on). that man is absolutely heavenly, scraping-my-eyes-out, BAWLING, jaw-drop, screaming crying throwing up, dead-drop gorgeous. quote tella. well, not literally. but almost.
like, what do you mean „gold shimmered no matter what, but few people could make darkness glitter the way he did“???!! WHAT DO YOU MEAN TELLA??!

i was baffled. i don’t think i will recover. 10/10, recommend.
