Harrowing, raw and devastatingly tragic, Mornings in Jenin is one of the most heartbreaking books I’ve read in a very long time but also one of the most poignant and important. Pain and love coats each word within this book in such a visceral way. While I admittedly struggled a little bit with the writing style at times overall, this is a book I won’t forget.

A beautiful and devastating book that everyone should read

Everyone should read this!

Probably one of the only books I didn't finish because I couldn't handle it. This is such an important topic, so I'll come back to it later.

The book starts with a family tree showing the main family - the Abulhejas, and I was honestly just shocked at how quickly the generations passed and how quick you grow to know all the people and the warmth of a culture you've never known in person.

The book is probably sadder with how updated you are on Palestine today. The people in the book aren't real, but all of the events are (with sources in the back) and as I was reading I was kinda expecting round storylines with neat endings and wrap-ups, but sometimes people would die undramatic sudden deaths or just disappear to never be heard from again. The story lets you feel generations worth of sorrow, loss and longing. Naturally I can't say if this is an accurate representation in any way shape or form, but I feel like I can understand a bit more in ways you can't really grasp from news or statistics.

I loved the honest, multifaceted and simply human way of telling a story of a family belonging to a people pretty much robbed of everything the past one hundred years. Definitely recommend it!
