This was just what the doctor ordered! Archie and Daniel are everything and I love them.

Why, oh why, has it taken me so long to read any [a:K.J. Charles|7123498|K.J. Charles|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1418032373p2/7123498.jpg]?

This was absolutely fantastic! It, perhaps, leans more on the mystery side than the pure romance side, but for the time-period this was utterly perfect. I adored Daniel (Queer Jews in historical romance? More please!) and sweet Archie was a doll. I would have loved to get further inside Daniel's head, but I think Archie's understanding of Daniel and how it was written gave an excellent grasp of Daniel and his thoughts as well.

The mystery had great twists and turns and this book kept stressing me out as things were unfolding. I was very invested in these characters and would love to read more about their adventures. Five glorious stars.

Horrific book cover. Incredible story. I love pretty much everything KJ Charles puts out ?? This was such fun.. Charle  has such a knack for character dynamics, I'm obsessed.

Absolutely delightful, start to finish. I don't know why I waited so long to read this particular K.J. Charles; it is far and away one of her best.

Like Band Sinister, one of my other favorites: Jewish hero! Country house shenanigans! Now with bonus spy stuff!

Like The Henchman of Zenda--not one of my favorites--this is also a not-so-stealthy vintage pulp crossover (King Solomon's Mines, in this case) but much more loosely and thus, perhaps, successfully.

Toward the end I realized that the vibe as a whole was very Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin, so, like, no wonder I loved it.

Think of England by KJ Charles 3.75/5 A really fun romance mystery with a few flaws holding it back. Really liked the characters and the setting, and its nice to see a romantic lead with a disability, and the other have to deal with antisemitism at the time in Britain. My two main issues were the romance felt rushed for the page length, and the two different 3rd act breakups just felt a little forced. Im not a fan of that in general anyway (its one of the reasons i struggle with romance because i rarely like how its handled). I will say if Charles was to write more books with these characters, then id be in because i liked them, and i can imagine the adventures they will be having (that being said id be hesitant as the last Charles sequel I read was 1 star)

KJ Charles has done it again. And by "it" I mean give me every single thing I've ever needed from a book and served it to me on silver platter.

The plot was exactly the amount of action and romance that I've come to expect from this author with plenty of twists and turns and scandal that makes me fall in love with their writing every. Single. Time.

Curtis and Daniel are complete opposites but work together so well. There's an obvious friction between the two at even just their first meeting and it takes some time for them to learn from one another and I cannot stress enough how well it is done. Curtis especially has some really great character development specifically about the preconceived notions he has about Daniel and I appreciate how the author handled it.

And I especially LOVED how the author characterized Daniel. His flamboyancy and his being Jewish are pretty important parts of his character and I absolutely ADORED how the author portrayed him. The author wrote him with a deft hand that neither caricaturized nor hid these traits that very much othered him from the other guests at the house and were pretty dangerous identities to have back then and honestly, still to this day.

This story packs a hell of a punch in the best possible way. You will fall utterly in love with these characters and I cannot recommend it enough.

(Also as a side-note, I read Proper English before reading this one and oh did I love seeing my girls again in this one. Honestly almost liked reading that one first more than vice versa because it was like seeing an old friend again and you were already in love with Pat and Fen *heart-eyes emoji*)
