challenging dark funny mysterious sad tense slow-paced

It’s been too long since I read the last book. I thought it was still darkly funny at points, but I felt like the book took way too long. That might just be because I had moved in from the story and didn’t care as much as I used to. I would have DNFed it but it’s the last one in a series.

Where to start with this train wreck. I jumped on the train knowing it will crash but I'm still somehow pikachu surprised it was that bad.

The plot was barely there??? Nothing interesting happened, characters were travelling, some murders that I was supposed to care about?? (Mia definitely did! Only for few seconds, though) Everyone just seemed to hype Mia up and make her to be this absolute amazing goddess and the chosen one, which was just tiresome to read about. The god-sun-moon story was so confusing that I lost any interest in reading it and just skimmed through everything.

The characters are definitely the biggest downside of the whole book. Ashlinn is the absolute worst. She's selfish, cruel, immature one faced bitch. Mia's character development was to become a stupid cheating flip-flop asshole. Mia and Ashlinn together is my worst nightmare. Fucking make up your mind, both of you. Are you going to be a lovey-dovey killer duo or do you drop some crocodile tears to make it seem like you have even a tiny bit of depth in you, I didn't believe any excuses they had for their actions. Zero respect to them. They truly deserve each other.

One star above the shittiest rating is purely because of Tric. I'm sorry, you didn't deserve to be a plot device, so toxic wlw couple can have their tRuE lOvE.

Let's just not comment how Kristoff really wanted some pats on the back for being clever. You're not, you've now leveled up to the ultimate cringe. Why was this book inception necessary? I tolerated this edgy narrative in the first books, but now it punched me in the face.

Sex scenes also seemed to be some horny man's pipe dream, yas lesbians getting it on, so hot, so sexy. It's so woke to have serious conversations while sucking on a tit. Let's not mention how Mia and Ash congratulated a man for being in a sexual intercourse with an adult in mid twenties when he was sixteen, because having sex with a minor is totally normalised and should be encouraged even!!! Easy to tell the book is written by a man. And no, it's not okay even when you make fun of this yourself as well. It just makes you a self aware A grade dick and not the good kind.

Waste of time. 'Nevernight' is one of my favourite books, but do yourself a favour and don't read further.

Nevernight is still my fave book of the series. Hands down. The last quarter of this book felt very meandering and slow to me but the majority of the book was thrilling and interesting and just keeps you reading. The answers come pretty soon in the book actually and they make perfect sense. Mia got her end and it was pretty damm good. There's a new character called Cloud who's a pirate and I instantly fell for him. And Mia's brother is a little shit who I don't know how to feel about.

For the conclusion to a series, it gets a B and is technically a 4.5 book for me, not an overall fave like Nevernight was, because of the last quarter, a certain character done wrong and not having the ending I would have preferred it to be but I did love this book, and I love this series. Nevernight is top shelf, Godsgrave is hanging off the edge of the top shelf and Darkdawn fell just below it.

Spoiler

The Best of the Best:
-That dinner scene, pure comedy gold.

-Cloud. How does this character come into the last book and not have that much page time and yet in instantly loveable?

-Mia and the little shit's relationship, the way they slowly formed their sibling relationship, that came with a lot of arguments that were just funny and entertaining. I may be mixed on the little shit but I liked him when he was with Mia and with the others. Every time he's like yous have filthy mouths, he says it in such a way I kinda loved him for it (before he did what he did).

-Mia becoming Pirate Queen. This big baddie pirate king everyone keeps going on about how terrible, how powerful he is and then Mia just hacks his head off, just like that. The way she does it, is so awesome. My queen.

-Mister Kindly avenging Eclipse. So sweet.

-The invasion of the church, them thinking they have the upper hand because they read a book in a library that does not allow you to find a book unless it wants to be found, how stupid can you get? Later fuckers.

-The author making fun of himself. The book within a book. Yeah I was for that. Which seems to be an unpopular opinion. And am I glad the sex scenes were brought up, Can tell this was written by a man, the whole describing certain body parts as flowers is called out. Needed that.

The Answers:
-So Mercurio is the narrator. Did not call that.

-I guessed that the darken were fragments of the night sky. I was close-there fragments of the god who was god of the moon in the night sky. And Godsgrave is constantly referred to looking like somebody lying on their back because the name Gods Grave is basically spot on. Missing his head.

The Deaths:
-So I don't care that much for Ash and her relationship with Mia but her death scene almost choked me. Because I could feel Mia's grief and that hurt.

-Eclipse, dying because a boy couldn't stand up to his father both hurt and angered me. I hated that little shit in that moment and couldn't ever really forgive him for that. You don't kill the dog, even if it's just a shadow dog little boy because Eclipse showed you more kindness then your father ever could and still you just let it happen so fuck you, traitor. (Yep still not over that)

-Butcher, after seeing his son in that little shit and protecting him like was his son and being killed for doing so, hurt.

-Wavewaker who got his theatre, his lifelong dream and then was cut down before he could have that dream come to life was heartbreaking.

Those four deaths, they hurt the most. And yes, Mia's death did not, surprisingly.

Love Relationships:
-I am Team Tric. Even came back to life but still very dead, overly dramatic, why are you talking like that team Tric all the way. So fuck you for picking Ash.
One thing that got me, that hurt me was Tric's declaration of love that he crawled his way back for Mia only to find her in the arms of his murderer. Poor Tric, he deserved so much more.
Why pick Ash? I don't see it, won't ever see.

-What the hell was with the Falcons all falling for one another. That came out of left field and like no, can we not. Your friends, stay friends. And then the marriage shit at the end, I am going to pretend I never saw that. Nope.

Endings:
-Mercurio. His character got the best ending in the whole damm book and he rightfully deserved it all.

-The little shit. Yay he survived, not really, I was kinda hoping he'd got out with his father and sister but I knew he would be the last darken standing, guessed that back in Godsgrave. Look, he's a kid and that was his father, I feel I should give him a little leeway for being a traitor but Eclipse, can't forgive you mate.

-Sid surviving, I thought he might and so glad he did. He got his happily ever after which I'm glad about.

-Tric, he got done dirty. He got fucked over. He should have been left to stay dead in Nevernight.

-Mia's death. And rebirth. I like that the god kind of like gave life back to her after all she did for him but having Ash come back as well was a bit too much. Ash should have stayed dead and Mia goes back to her family would have been a stronger ending because it's always been about family, not about that kind of love.
The author said this was the least heartbreaking ending. Does that mean in another Ash stayed dead? There are three endings to this story and quite frankly I would have preferred the author not to have choose the one he did.

The ending?! The climax?! The ultimate plot twists?!

I am deceased.

For real, this whole series was amazing from start to finish. Even when it was slow, it still held me in its grip.

Idk how to feel about this book. It was really good in most parts but some things are just dumb and sooooo unnecessary. They really took me out of the story and made me indifferent to a lot of stuff.

*edit* after thinking about it I realized that the annoying parts just outweighed the good ones for me. I don't really care for this book. It had a lot of potential in the beginning but that's about it.

It's a no-brainer to give this book full 5 stars. This book was just utterly perfect, breathtaking, heartbraking, fierce and everything more. I now know it is absolutely possible to hate and love someone at the same time. I'm looking at you Jay Kristoff, you did so many things to my poor poor heart.

All and all, this full series is just out of this world amazing and I think I can honestly say this is my new favourite series.
