The most average thriller i’ve ever read in my life. I’m not into Law & Order very much and i thought that aspect of the book would be more minor than it was. The killer and his motivations/backstory (his mom was horrible so he takes it out on women) has been so tired & overdone like where is the originality? I do respect the treatment of Lila and showing her as a flawed human being and not presenting her as either 100% a victim or 100% a horrible person. She’s frustrating at times but her owning that trauma does not rule your life or excuse your past bad actions by the end is a nuanced approach that i appreciate. (this is coming from someone who experienced the same thing that happened to lila in the past ) Also, very happy for her (most likely) getting engaged like she’s always wanted but stopped herself from having as i’m currently struggling with commitment after going through that same trauma.
Graphic: Misogyny, Self harm, Suicidal thoughts, and Sexism
Moderate: Sexual harassment, Abandonment, Mental illness, Sexual violence, Rape, Murder, Bullying, Toxic friendship, Alcoholism, Ableism, Grief, Death, Addiction, and Sexual assault
Minor: Emotional abuse, Car accident, Forced institutionalization, Drug abuse, Child abuse, Toxic relationship, Suicide attempt, and Drug use

I've read all of Eskens book and this is the only one I think comes close to how good The Life We Bury was. Lila finds herself just like Joe did at the end of The Life We Bury. I called a few things, but not the most significant ones. Well done all around. Also, the audio book makes it more alive.
Moderate: Addiction, Sexual harassment, Self harm, Panic attacks/disorders, Sexual assault, Sexism, Rape, Murder, Violence, Suicide, and Sexual violence
