I really liked this one.    There are several bits of narration in omniscient third person where the narrator talks about it as a story and it's lovely and well written.  It reminds me of the opening of In the Shadow of Spindrift House.

Both characters were interesting, as were the Moors.  I wish it had been a little longer
and I was disappointed that it ends with Jack and Jill arriving home so we don't get to see what happens after they return at the end of Every Heart a Doorway,
but it was a lovely little story.

I've read the first four books in the Wayward Children series so far, and this one has been my favorite! I loved the classic/gothic horror vibes and really found myself relating hard to both Jack and Jill. I'm also really enjoying McGuire's writing. She's so good at writing characters that you can feel for, and her imaginative stories are just a ton of fun to read, even when they hurt your feelings a little.
Why did she have to do poor Jack dirty like that tho!?
I'm really enjoying this series and can't wait to continue!

Both a great standalone and follow-up to Every Heart a Doorway! I loved learning more about Jack and Jill, and the magical world they came from. I enjoyed this darker take and the sibling-focused storyline.

Not as innovative as the first Wayward Children, but a completely captivating story that's just a weird and dark portal fantasy. I really liked getting to see more of the Moors, and I loved Jack even more by the end (there's a lot of understanding about Jill as a character, too, but Jack is just so good).
