i enjoyed how easy to read the book was, and was having an enjoyable time up until about half way through. i think the book should come with content warnings for manipulative relationships and seems to gloss over the seriousness of them, still painting Kit to be the heartthrob we thought he was. I thought the ending was unnecessary and only used for a shock factor. It made me dislike my favourite character and the
adult/child relationship
was glossed over in seriousness. I thought the portrayal of the clearly autistic character could have been done much better and didn’t have to follow so many stereotypes.

My goal this year was to read a book a month, and I’m happy that this was the first book that I finished. The pacing was good, the characters were interesting, and the ending was shocking, but did not seem out of place.

this book is generally criminal. the main character is best described as vindictive and bitter, which is felt more harshly as they are also the narrator. at times, their negativity is overwhelming.
some parts were fun, but overall, it felt pretentious, desperate, and horrifically lacking in self awareness.
the environment is effective however  - the feeling of late summer is well-captured. additionally, it reminded me of gold rush by taylor swift. so that was nice.

i would not recommend. this book did not deserve to be nominated for the carnegie award.
