It was okay. None of her other books hold a candle to [b:The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things|253106|The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things|Carolyn Mackler|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1405148355s/253106.jpg|2974214].

Mara's one of those girls, the ones who seem to be effortlessly at the top of everything. Vying for the top ranking in school, a list of extracurriculars as long as her arm, a job she likes, doting parents. She's passionate about her veganism. She has her Ivy League acceptance in hand and plans to finish university a year early. And then along comes her just-barely-younger-than-Mara niece, and things change.
I read this largely for the fact that it had 'vegan' in the title, and I was curious to see how that would be addressed. To that end I'm a bit disappointed, as Mara's veganism is ultimately something tied to her need for control and order, not something that's really organic to who she is / how she approaches the world. Still...I enjoyed the back-and-forth between Mara and V (and the balance they ultimately have to find), and I enjoyed having a pretty grounded heroine whose rebellions against the norm—against 'perfect'—are on a small, realistic scale.

I related a lot to the main character, Mara. I am glad that she was able to grow and learn to make her own decisions. Although, I was a bit disappointed that many of those decisions revolved around a guy.
the story was okay;however, the age gap made me uncomfortable. her being a senior and him being 22 idk, it made me feel weird. especially since it was her boss. just weird.
mostly read bc i wanted to read the second book.

A quick, easy read. No big dramatic storyline. Quite a ‘chatty’ style of writing, almost diary like. Definitely feels like the book was aimed at a teenage audience. An un-eventful ending too. A little underwhelming overall, but nice to have a simple, quick book to read.
I am inclined to say that I didn't find much to like in this book, but I needed a fluff book, and it delivered.
The storyline was interesting, but *very* predictable. I probably enjoyed the book more because it was set in Brockport, NY, which is near where I grew up. It was fun to read about a lot of the upstate places - although it seemed they were mentioned in the book only to emphasize the location. Without those local references, the book could have taken place anywhere in small-town America.
It is a good story for teenage readers looking for books they can identify with (such as a vegan main character) or for reluctant readers (due to the fairly simplistic language and predictable plot line). Not really suitable for anyone looking for great writing or deep meanings.
I will not read further in the series.

Hee. Carolyn Mackler is great. She even writes her own characters into her other books, and that's awesome. This one's not entirely as good as [b:The Earth My Butt and Other Round Things|253106|The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things|Carolyn Mackler|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1173159365s/253106.jpg|2974214], but her family dynamics are almost second to none.
